KARACHI: The American College of Surgeons has conferred honorary fellowship to Dr Adib Rizvi of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) for his distinguished services in the field of surgical sciences, public services and also for pioneering the transplant movement in Pakistan.
The fellowship was conferred to Dr Rizvi at the annual congress of the college held at Washington DC, according to information here. This year, the fellowship was awarded to five eminent surgeons hailing from various parts of the world who have made extra ordinary contributions in their respective branches of the surgery.
The globally-renowned surgeons who received fellowship were from Australia, Colombia, France and Japan besides Dr Rizvi of Pakistan who earned the singular honour for his country. In its citation, the college recounted the meritorious services rendered by Dr Rizvi by setting up the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation in Karachi which not only provides state-of-the-art medical treatment to the people totally free of cost but also one of the growing urological and transplant centres of the region.
Citation also lauded the pivotal role which Dr Rizvi has played in his country by bringing a legislation to prohibit commercial transplantation. Established in 1903, the American College of Surgeons is the largest professional organisation of surgeons in the world with 80 thousand members on its roll. Each year, a group of globally-renowned surgeons are awarded the honorary fellowship.
The process is quite selective and competitive as in its entire history the college has awarded honorary fellowship to 445 surgeons. By winning the fellowship, Dr Rizvi has joined the very selective and an exclusive group of surgeons who are bringing a great honour to his country and medical fraternity.
Also present at the ceremony was Prof Zafarullah Chaudhry, president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.
