A Sargodha University professor under investigation in a corruption case died of ‘cardiac arrest’, prison officials said on Friday.
They said Professor Mian Javed was being held at Camp Jail, Lahore, where he suffered a heart attack and died.
Meanwhile, photos of the deceased professor’s body with handcuffs still on went viral on social media as the accountability watchdog came under severe criticism.
Professor Mian Javed was the former CEO of the university’s Lahore sub-campus. He was arrested by NAB earlier in October along with former Sargodha University vice-chancellor Dr Mohammad Akram Chaudhry and four other university officials.
The professor was later shifted to camp jail on judicial remand.
The suspects are accused of receiving millions in bribes for allowing third parties to establish illegal sub-campuses.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the NAB said that the professor had not died under NAB’s custody. He said prison officials at the Camp Jail had assured the bureau that the suspect was in good health when they took his custody.
Officials at Camp Jail shifted the deceased professor to Services Hospital on Friday after he complained of chest pain. He died at the hospital.
